Reading Lists

Reading Lists

Reading is hugely beneficial to students for a wide range of reasons.  The more students read, the better they get at it. Reading improves a student’s vocabulary and gives them access to a huge range of experiences and perspectives beyond their own.  Reading is an important element of new GCSE and A-Level specifications and students are at an advantage if they are more proficient readers.  Practising by reading a wide range of texts will support students’ learning in the curriculum in all years.

Below are the Wider Reading Lists that have been compiled by teachers to support students’ enrichment and independent study across the school.  They have been selected because teachers think they will interest students or because by reading them they will increase their knowledge and understanding in the subject.

The main purposes of the reading list are to:

  • increase the amount of reading students are doing
  • foster a love of learning and curiosity about subjects beyond the curriculum
  • enable parents to support the learning of their children by signposting interesting material to extend the school curriculum and promote discussion
  • improve students’ literacy skills, including vocabulary and expression

Many of these titles are available in the school library or local library services.  Students could seek guidance on obtaining books from the librarian or their subject teachers.
